About The Role:

The Junior Design Manager will lead all design related tasks for the International Store Development Projects and small works.

Using technical and creative expertise, the Junior Design Manager will manage design from the discovery phase (Riba Stage 02) up to the Technical Design and Opening (Riba Stage 07) with the support of the Senior Design Manager. The Junior Design Manager will also work closely with the Store Transformation and Store Development PM Teams overseeing all international and small work design related projects.

Location:  Piccadilly

Key interfaces: You will need to interact with Internal and External Stakeholders, 3rd party Consultants, all Business Functions and Heads of Departments

 

What You'll Do:

  • Oversee the design process, applying both technical and creative expertise as required.
  • Manage and develop project briefs in collaboration with the Senior Design Manager, Project Management (PM) teams, and the Head of Proposition, ensuring design requirements are clearly defined and progressed to Technical Design.
  • Effectively manage third-party relationships, motivating and guiding external design agencies to deliver solutions that meet project criteria.
  • Partner with the Senior Design Manager and PM teams to define project scope, quality, budget, and programme.
  • Identify and anticipate risks, dependencies, and escalation requirements, providing clear mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with PM teams, architects, contractors, quantity surveyors, and site managers to ensure designs are structurally sound, compliant with company standards, and aligned with the Fortnum’s brand brief.
  • Support the PM team with project costing and tendering, offering guidance on procurement, value engineering, and site-related design changes during delivery.
  • Manage all design information, maintaining accurate and comprehensive documentation throughout the design process.
  • Develop and maintain a reference book of external design standards, suppliers, consultants, and contractors.
  • Work with the Sustainability and Accessibility teams to establish and maintain Fortnum & Mason’s sustainable and accessible design standards.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for design-related queries and information circulation.
  • Communicate project progress using reporting tools and status updates.
  • Manage design-related processes to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
  • With support from the Senior Design Manager, conduct financial, technical, and operational risk assessments, logging and reporting on risks, opportunities, and potential hazards.
  • Stay up to date with relevant regulations, codes, and legislation, ensuring compliance across all projects.
  • Engage effectively with key stakeholders, ensuring they are informed of progress against milestones and initiating corrective actions where necessary.
  • Ensure clarity of scope and requirements across all stakeholders for international store development and small works projects.
  • Drive continuous improvement, seeking opportunities to optimise solutions and enhance project outcomes.
  • Support supplier negotiations and sourcing strategies to deliver cost savings on business projects.
  • Ensure new sites open on time, within budget, and to the required standard.
  • Work with the Senior Design Manager and Store Development PM to review and approve fabrication drawings, ensuring compliance with company standards.
  • Deliver a range of international store development and small works projects to a high standard

What We Are Looking For:

  • Relevant Degree or Professional qualification from Architect to Interior Architect
  • You will be results orientated with an ability to delivery projects within time and budget
  • You will with the support of the Senior Design Manager be capable of managing project milestones, setting clear targets and providing practical solutions when required.
  • You will have a collaborative, considered and adaptable working style, with an ability to stakeholder manage and communicate at all levels
  • Tenacious, with the ability to problem solve within a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organisational & project management skills, with meticulous attention to detail and ability to deliver accurate results
  • Strong resilience and an ability to adapt to changing priorities
  • Has strong knowledge of Autocad, Sketchup (with V-ray or Corona), other 3D visualisation program such as 3ds Max, Rhino or 4D cinema, Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Office
  • Confident communicator at all levels, with an ability to persuade and influence
  • Demonstrate an authentic and passionate understanding of a brand and brand values
  • Knowledge of Design management principles. Demonstrable experience of forward planning, problem solving, analytical thinking. Preferable in a retail or Hospitality environment
